The Spare Key

Agnes started showing up unannounced on a Tuesday in March, using the spare key my mom had given her years ago for emergencies, and the first time she did it she caught something none of us had planned for her to see.

Pearl was out on the balcony in a light, cold rain, no jacket, and Damon was in the kitchen with the radio on loud enough that I don't think he even heard Agnes's key in the lock.

"How long," Agnes said, already moving past him toward the door, and something about her voice made Damon actually look up from what he was doing for the first time all afternoon.

"She's fine, she's got a shirt on, it's not even that cold—"

Agnes didn't answer him. She had the door open and Pearl wrapped in her own cardigan before my mom, alerted by the radio getting shut off hard enough to crack, even made it out of the bedroom.

What followed wasn't really an argument, because my mom didn't raise her voice, she just told Agnes, very evenly, that she appreciated the concern but that she and Damon were handling their own household, and that showing up unannounced with a spare key wasn't going to be something that kept happening.

Agnes left without the chicken she'd brought. She hugged Pearl for a long time at the door and didn't hug Damon at all, and that was the visit where I first understood that being right about something and being believed about it were two entirely separate problems.
