The Cool-Down

The Long Afternoon

The Wednesday my mom's shift changed started, like most of the bad ones did, with an accident at breakfast, and Damon walking Pearl to the balcony door before I'd even finished my cereal.

"Two minutes," he told her, the way he always did, holding up two fingers.

Two minutes became the whole morning. I watched from the couch, too scared to say anything out loud after the last warning he'd given me, and the rain that had been light when he put her out there turned into something heavier by ten, the kind that soaked through in under a minute.

Pearl stopped pounding on the glass around eleven. That was the part that scared me the most, more than the crying ever had, the quiet that came after it, her just standing there against the railing with her arms wrapped around herself, small and gray and not calling for anyone anymore.

I tried the door once, quietly, while Damon was in the shower, and found he'd flipped the little lock on the frame, the one meant to keep it shut against wind.

"She's learning," he told me when he came back out and caught me standing near it. "You'll thank me for this someday, when she's older and she actually listens the first time."

My mom's key hit the lock four hours after it started, three hours and fifty-eight minutes longer than any cool-down had ever officially been allowed to last.
